Tigers and bears striving for Latin America
This year, Russian official arms exporter Rosoboronexport has led to Brazil 23 defence companies that displayed over 300 military and dual-use products at LAAD 2017.
By tradition, the Military Industrial Company (VPK) has taken part in the show, with its delegation, along with their colleagues from the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC) and Rosoboronexport, showed Latin American experts the BTR-80 and BTR-80A wheeled armoured personnel carriers (APC) as well as Tigr (Russian for Tiger) armoured cars that are popular with the armies of several regional countries. The VPK-3924 Medved (Russian for bear) mine-protected armoured wheeled vehicle has been unveiled to potential customers. Experts with various foreign militaries and law enforcement agencies, attending the show, immediately took interest in the advanced Russian vehicle.

FSMTC Deputy Director Anatoly Punchuk, who led the Russian delegation at the show, told the media: “Latin American countries are interested in Russian-made Tigr and Medved armoured wheeled vehicles, and contracts are being hashed out. Security services and law enforcers are pondering the acquisition of these armoured wheeled vehicles too. Specific delivery schedules will be set down after contracts have been placed.”
He added that Russian manufacturers are carrying on an active dialogue with Latin American states to promote their armoured vehicles on their markets.
“The vehicles have been tailored to the region’s climatic and geographic conditions. Many foreign customers have shown strong interest in them,” the FSMTC deputy director said.
