VPK-3924 “MEDVED” SPECIAL POLICE VEHICLE

VPK-3924 “Medved” special police vehicle is intended for use as a transport facility and an operational & administrative use vehicle during counter-terrorism operations, riot control, execution of the mission aimed at territorial defense, including conveyance of the contingent when route marched  at ambient air temperature from minus 45 °C to plus 50 °C.

It can be driven both down public roads and across country providing:

•               Protection against chemical and special agents;

•               Anti-ballistic crew protection when the vehicle is attacked by fire from the distance exceeding 5 m and using a Dragunov sniper rifle with a 7-BZ-3 cartridge and a B-32 bullet;

•               Anti-ballistic protection of systems determining the moveability of the vehicle, when it is attacked by fire from the distance exceeding 5 m using АK-74 machine gun (5.45 mm) and АKМ (7.62 mm) with a 7N6 cartridge and PS bullet, and a 57-N-231 cartridge with a PS bullet respectively;

Protection of the crew when a non-shatterable explosive device with the weight of 7 kg of TNT is blown up under the bottom or a wheel.

Design Features

•              Frameless chassis construction, all units and assemblies are arranged and secured on a monocoque;

•               Invariance of the ballistic and underbelly mine protection with the possibility for changing  the protection level during operation;

 Installation of a high-power diesel engine ensuring high propulsion performance and dynamic characteristics;

•               Application of a high-efficient climate control plant ensuring comfort internal environment in a manned hull compartment during operation within the ambient air temperature interval from minus 45 °C to plus 50 °C;

•               The inside ergonomics is focused on a maximum convenience while embussing and debussing, as well as long-term presence of the military personnel inside the vehicle;


•       A large effective internal volume inside the vehicle (10.5 m3) provides the possibility and convenience for different types of a special-purpose equipment;

•               Application of a modular-assembly principle provides a high level of repairability (time assigned for replacement of a power unit shall not exceed 4 hours).

Design Features of the Hull

Armored, monocoque, welded steel sheets. Manned hull compartment is of a single-compartment type. Embussing and debussing are arranged via two side doors and one rear flip-flap door. There are two access doors in the hull top. All glass pieces are bullet-proof, they are adhered to armored frames and made as removable window-based modules. When a damaged window-based assembly module is replaced, it is not necessary to adhere the glass. Window-based modules may be fitted with port holes for shooting using individual weapons.

   To improve the ballistic protection of the perimeter in the manned compartment inside the hull, some additional removable armored elements may be mounted. The protection level will be defined by the construction of armored elements mounted. Underbelly mine protection elements may be mounted on the hull bottom.


Removable pendent modules are placed on hull walls.

Due to application of removable internal armored modules, the possibility for changing the protection class and capability is ensured respectively, including the activities performed by the crew.

Underbelly Mine Protection of the Hull

The underbelly mine protection of the hull is provided by installation of energy-capturing screens, as well as due to application of a special geometry and the design of the hull bottom (energy-capturing screens are not mounted in the 1st and 2nd configuration).

Anti-Fragmentation Protection

Usage of splinter-proof screens for paneling the inner hull surface provides an opportunity to:

•               ensure protection of the crew against secondary splinters when bullets, fragments of shells and mines are hit inside the hull;

•               exclude a ricochet hit from the opposite wall in case of hull penetration;

•       improve a thermo & noise insulation of the hull;

•       improve ergonomic interior indexes.

Performance and Mobility

High vehicle cone and maneuverability indexes are ensured due to application
of the following items:

• 6-cylinder turbo-charged YaMZ-53601 diesel engine, that ensures the capacity/weight ratio to be equal to 22.3 hp/t;

• independent torsion suspension on transversal arms fitted with hydraulic telescopic dampers and anti-sway bars;

• steering control with a hydraulic amplifier;

• pneumatic tubeless radial-type 14.00R20 tires with adjustable pressure and MVFI insertions by Hutchinson;

• high road clearance, 420 mm;

• interaxial and interwheel   locking differentials;

• wheel reduction gears;

• two-speed low range transfer box.

Repairability

A mechanism intended for moving out the power monoblock unit ensures easy access to assemblies in engine and electropneumatic transmission gear drive for carrying out an inspection regarding their functionality, repair and replacement. Maintenance is performed without moving out the power monoblock unit.

Assemblies and units of the fuel, pneumatic and brake systems are arranged in the removable pendant module and it is easy to access them for maintenance and repair.


Driving axles, the transfer box and cardan gears are maintained and demounted from the vehicle bottom without any extra works performed.

Arrangement of the Extra Equipment

Side vessels are intended for arrangement of a special equipment, as well as for storage of field fortification entrenching tools.

The following extra equipment is mounted on the vehicle:

•               a centralized fire inflation pressure control system controlled from the driver’s seat;

•  a full-size spare wheel on the roof in the holder with the up- and down slope reduction gear;

•               WARN DC 18000 electric width with the propulsive force up to 6,800 kgf and the rope length 27 m;


•       WEBASTO THERMO E 320 pre-start heater;

•       an air conditioning system with two independent evaporators.
